At the age of 23, he married Kashimani Devi and moved to Varanasi, where he worked as an accountant in the Military Engineering Department of the British government. He lived a simple and honest life as a householder, balancing his worldly duties with his spiritual aspirations. He had five children, two sons and three daughters.


In 1861, he met his guru Mahavatar Babaji, the immortal master of Kriya Yoga, who initiated him into the sacred science and instructed him to spread it among the masses. Lahiri Mahasaya obeyed his guru's command and began to teach Kriya Yoga to anyone who sincerely asked for it, regardless of their caste, creed, religion, or gender. He also received further guidance and blessings from Babaji and other great masters, such as Sri Yukteswar Giri and Swami Trailanga.


Lahiri Mahasaya was revered by his disciples and admirers as a saint, a prophet, and a miracle-worker. He demonstrated many extraordinary powers, such as healing, clairvoyance, bilocation, materialization, and levitation. He also had a profound knowledge of the scriptures and the sciences, and could explain them in a simple and practical way. He was humble and compassionate, and treated everyone with equal respect and love.


Lahiri Mahasaya left his physical body on September 26, 1895, at the age of 67. He attained mahasamadhi, the conscious exit from the body of a realized soul. He had predicted his departure and prepared his disciples for it. He also gave them his final instructions and blessings. He assured them that he would always be with them in spirit and guide them on their path.


Lahiri Mahasaya's legacy lives on through his teachings and his disciples. His direct disciples included many illustrious personalities, such as Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, Swami Pranabananda Giri, Swami Keshabananda Giri, Panchanan Bhattacharya, Balananda Brahmachari, Ram Gopal Muzumdar, and Paramahansa Yogananda.
