This is the only motion picture score adapted from a play written by a literary figure, Lord Dunsany. A few days before his death in February 1941, he lent his name to a play by James Agate, who wrote the play based upon Dunsany's story.
This is the first and only film by a female director about the life of Queen Marry, the wife of the last king of Bohemia. The film is a period piece showing the period between the time when he went to prison to the time when he fled to the Prussian border into exile. While filming, the filmmakers discovered that the film was the first to be completed in over 150 years. Marry and her daughters live in the castle of Grunewald which should be Gruneberg if there is any justification of the use of the "G" in the English language.
This is the first of the great John Williams scores. It is the first and only film scored by John Williams, and was written from the elements of his mother's song which was a ballad he was very fond of. Every scene is filled with singing, and a lot of it with the main theme and variations ending the credits. The theme is heard in many places throughout the movie, and (despite no invention of the composition) all the songs slow at the end of the film to a haunting silence and an atmosphere of longing. It's good to be hopeful, but unfortunately this film does not have a happy ending.
Filmed during the same year as Star Trek First Contact, This Alien was the first in a series of low-budget "E.T.-like" creature movies. This Alien sports an excellent score with the main theme composed by Martin Phipps which was also the theme of his short film Earthbound. d2c66b5586
