When granulation is necessary, granules are preferably fine and coarse, because they have higher powder flowability [217]. Figure 13 shows the powder flowability of different granules prepared by a commercial granulation machine. Note that the flowability of the dry powder is also included to evaluate the powder flowability. The powder flowability of the granules is comparable to that of the powder, as shown in Fig. 13. Therefore, the powder flowability can be attributed to the granules. However, the flowability of the granules is higher than that of the powder, as shown in Fig. 13. This is because the granules are much finer than the powder, as shown in Table 6, and the sieving step reduces the particle size. The powder flowability can be improved by using a binder more strongly than the original, by adding a flowability improver, or by adding a lubricant to the feedstock powder. The powder flowability is rarely improved by the comminution step itself because the powder flowability is not correlated with the powder size. Note that in Table 8, the flowability of the powder from a spray dryer is very high because of the low specific surface area. Table 6 shows the powder size distribution of the granules by the commercial granulation machine, and the average particle size is 0.0645 mm. The flowability of the granules is comparable to that of the powder, as shown in Fig. 13. Figure 14 illustrates the powder size distribution of the granules by the manual granulation method, and the average particle size is 0.08 mm. The flowability of the granules is higher than that of the powder, as shown in Fig. 13.
The dried granules can be comminuted by manual hand method or in a laboratory milling machine (e.g., an IKA M1 laboratory mill). For laboratory milling, the manual technique is preferable because it is simpler and more accurate to control the powder size. The laboratory milling machine provides high throughput and good accuracy, but the costs are high. For the powder from a spray dryer, a mortar and pestle can be used to comminute the dried granules. Some studies showed that the resultant powders have a narrow size distribution ( 827ec27edc
